2025 election wrap up

The Fairfax electorate sent a clear message: the community is ready for change. Independent candidate Francine Wiig achieved a strong third-place result in her first campaign, showing that many locals want a new kind of politics, one that listens, responds, and puts community first.

The community-backed independent, Francine Wiig, sparked real momentum - starting from Fairfax Matters community surveys and kitchen table conversations to market stalls and candidate forums, the campaign created space for genuine dialogue about what matters most to people in Fairfax.

Top five results in Fairfax (first preference votes):

  1. Ted O’Brien (Liberal National) – 37.89%

  2. Naomi McQueen (Labor) – 24.86%

  3. Francine Wiig (Independent) – 11.78%

  4. Sue Etheridge (Greens) – 10.22%

  5. Beatrice Marsh (One Nation) – 7.41%

Francine’s third-place result, ahead of both the Greens and One Nation, was a remarkable achievement for a first-time, community-backed independent. It reflects a growing appetite across the region for fresh voices and greater accountability.

This result was powered by a motivated and engaged community—people who were willing to knock on doors, hand out flyers, host conversations, and have honest talks about the future of our region.

Fairfax Matters is proud to have helped launch and support this campaign. While the seat remains with the incumbent, the shift in the vote shows we are not a quiet corner of the map—we are a community that cares, takes action, and believes in something better.

As we head into our AGM and plan the next steps, we carry with us the energy of this campaign and the knowledge that Fairfax is ready to be heard. If you want to join the team come along to our AGM Saturday 23 August 3-5pm.
